Sevilla – Estadio Olímpico de La Cartuja

After a long walk from my hotel through the city center I ended up at Estadio Olímpico de La Cartuja (+- 20km..). The beautiful but modern ground was built in 1997 and opened in 1999. The stadium is 5-star rated by the UEFA and can hold 57.619 fans which means it's one of the bigger grounds in Spain. It was actually built in the bid for the 2004 Olympics, which went to Athens.

In 2003 Estadio Olímpico de La Cartuja hosted the Uefa Cup Final between Celtic FC and FC Porto (2-3 a.e.t.). Until now (2017) the national football team of Spain and the Andalusian selection both hosted 4 games in this stadium.

Spain Andalusian Selection
1999 Croatia 3-1 2001 Tunisia 3-3
1999 Argentina 0-2 2004 Malta 0-0
2000 Netherlands 1-2 2005 China 4-0
2012 China 1-0 2006 Israel & Palestine

Next to the football events, the ground has been used for the 2004 Davis Cup which was won by Spain. Nowadays it's mainly used for concerts like AC/DC, Madonna, U2,... But anyway, it's a real shame to see a rather new ground being in such a bad condition. I was very lucky to get in as there was only 1 open door (as if it had to be!) and it was absolutely worth the visit.
